Project - Anchovy Bandit
A cosy pizzeria slinging wood-fired pizzas in suburban Adelaide.
Warm wood paneling and comfy booth seating makes Anchovy Bandit a nostalgic destination for hungry cinemagoers in Prospect, South Australia. Evoking the simplicity of a European bistro, the space is warm, inviting and utterly without pretension.
Antipasto platters, wood-fired pizzas and film-inspired cocktails are a winning combination for this small suburban venue that is located within the Palace Nova cinema complex. Choose between bar, booth or table seating for a quick pre-film drink or a leisurely post-film dinner. Got some time? The Director’s Cut puts the chef in the director’s chair, highlighting the best Anchovy Bandit has to offer.
The original design by Sans-Arc introduced the layered textures of olive-green leather, oak paneling and intimate options, with nary a sharp angle in sight. The lighting Adelaide project features an intimate atmosphere benefitted by diffused area lighting rather than bright overhead lighting. The result is warm, nostalgic and comfortable, and the food is just the same.
In 2020 the pizzeria expanded into the space next door, doubling their seating space and allowing for new concept Bottega Bandito to open, catering to the daytime crowd looking for an Italian deli-style brunch offering. The enlarged space seamlessly matches the original design, Studio Gram adopting the warm wood paneling, soft lines and diffuse lighting of the original, paired with textured white walls, greenery and vintage-style Italian aperitif posters.
Throughout both spaces, the different lighting options work together to illuminate the space, preferring ambient light over brightness. Spotlights highlight the extensive variety of beverages, low pendants hang above the bar, and frosted globe wall lights offer soft area lighting. Sans-Arc opted for the Fat Shack Vintage Bunker Globe Wall Light above their booth seating, and Studio Gram picked up this style of lighting and ran with it in their expansion, installing similar lighting along the walls as well as suspending the globes from the ceiling with unique timber accents.
When designing a dining space, choosing the right lighting is key. Installing wall lights above booth or table seating creates pools of light that envelopes diners in warm ambient light that is ideal for relaxed night-time dining.
